The Cardinals and O’s are both relatively ratings-neutral compared to their remaining peers in the World Series pool.  Neutral MLB fans are sick of both the Giants and Cardinals (fatigue of familiarity, the two teams have had considerable success recently, breeding contempt from MLB neutrals), so no matter who the NL representative is, they will be wearing the black hat (and black robes, and black eye makeup, and black gloves – what we’re trying to say is the NL is going to be the bad guy in the 2014 World Series no matter what).  Sans the star power of Yadier Molina, St. Louis will double down on its role of faceless villain, which is not exactly compelling, though perhaps we should never underestimate the magical “please punch my face” powers of A.J. Pierzynski‘s mug.

The Orioles are the highest seed remaining in the MLB playoffs.  They hit home runs, and represent the East Coast, so there may be some draw there.  But there’s a lack of star power here too, outside of Nelson Cruz, who MLB would prefer not get the spotlight due to PED-related shenanigans in his past.

If the Orioles DO somehow manage to pull off the “2004 Boston Red Sox Comeback” in this ALCS in order to meet up with the Cardinals, they will be met with a team that is… well… a lot like the team they faced in the ALCS.  Like the Royals, the Cardinals spent the season meandering along – playing solid defense, hitting for almost no power, and receiving solid-if-unspectacular overall rotation production – and have magically added Magic WTF Dingers to their repertoire this October. It’s a potent formula, and one of which the Orioles would undoubtedly be tired. Don’t let the as of current 3-0 series hole fool you, however, as the Orioles have actually played pretty well in this series – the Royals just seem to be touched by God.
